The World’s Most Beautiful Libraries
“Without libraries what have we? We have no past and no future.” -Ray Bradbury
For centuries, books have housed the collective knowledge of the world and formed the foundations of educational institutions. Given that these objects contain such value, it only makes sense that throughout history people have constructed beautiful buildings to house them.
We put together a list of some of the most beautiful libraries as captured by Instagrammers around the world. For more photos from these architectural wonders, check out their linked location pages below.
- Stuttgart City Library, Stuttgart, Germany
- Trinity College Library, Dublin, Ireland
- Library of Alexandria, Alexandria, Egypt
- Real Gabinete Português de Leitura, Rio de Janiero, Brazil
- The Royal Danish Library, Copenhagen, Denmark
- George Peabody Library, Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD
- Kanazawa Umimirai Library, Kanazawa City, Japan
- New York Public Library, New York City, NY
San Francisco Instagrammers Say Farewell to #thatSFtree
San Francisco mourns the loss of the iconic tree atop Mt. Davidson: #thatsftree
In cities across the world, certain places become pilgrimage sites for Instagrammers. New York has the Brooklyn Bridge, Los Angeles has Griffith Observatory, and San Francisco had #thatsftree.
The tree, a long-deceased tree atop Mount Davidson, San Francisco’s tallest hill, became a place for the city’s Instagram community to come together. The tree’s pale color and slight lean perfectly framed views of downtown San Francisco or the Sutro Tower atop Twin Peaks. Sadly, the tree came down in unusually strong winds on Sunday night. Many traveled to tree last evening to pay respects.
Aren’t these ocean wave photos incredible? Photographer David Orias writes about his work:
I do this by using long shutter speeds and camera motion to achieve this goal. I am often asked where the colors on my waves come from. I shoot mostly at dawn and the geography of the location allows higher ambient light levels before the full illumination by the sun.

Hashtag Highlight: #followmeto with @muradosmann and @yourleo
Russian photographer Murad Osmann (@muradosmann) and his girlfriend Nataly Zakharova (@yourleo) travel constantly for work and they’ve come up with a unique and romantic perspective for sharing their experiences around the globe on Instagram that has caught the attention of publications like the Daily Mail and the Huffington Post. The entire project actually started as an accident: “I was taking pictures of everything and Nataly got annoyed, so she dragged me forward to move on. That’s how the first #followmeto was taken, and I quite liked the result so we have continued the series ever since.” Murad started using the hashtag #followmeto to catalog photos of Nataly leading him to landmarks and exotic places.
Be sure to follow Murad (@muradosmann) and Nataly (@yourleo) on Instagram for more of their around-the-world photos and a behind-the-scenes look at how to take them yourself!
